If you have thought about paying for original content on YouTube Originals, forget about it. According to reports from around the internet, YouTube is looking to switch from a premium subscription to a free strategy coming sometime “starting next year.”
The only way currently to watch YouTube Originals like Cobra Kai, a Karate Kid, and Step Up: High Water and others are through monthly subscription service to YouTube Premium. Currently, around $12 a month, you do get the added perks of ad-free youtube and offline viewing including additional benefits on mobile.
So far, YouTube’s hasn’t really created content that has created a huge discussion online, especially when comparing to Netflix and Amazon Originals. YouTube Originals budgets are in the “hundreds of millions of dollars,” vs Netflix and Amazon which have several billion dollars.”
YouTube isn’t shying away from original content it’s simply planning on placing ads in its original shows instead of making them a subscription only. Google has not disclosed just how many people pay for YouTube Premium, YouTube TV, or its newest service, YouTube Music Premium. The nice thing to look forward to is that shows like “Origin which features Tom Felton, which appears to be an interesting look into a sci-fi tv show.
